Muriel Bowser won 55% of the vote in the 2014 general election. She ran against incumbent mayor Vincent Gray, who had been elected in 2010 but was plagued by corruption allegations. Bowser was seen as a more progressive candidate than Gray, and she won the support of many of the city's unions.
