Ghuluww (excess) is an extreme view held by some Twelvers, which claims that Ali and his successors, the imams, are divine or semi-divine beings. This view was opposed by Musa al-Kazim, who stressed the humanity of the imams and argued that they were no more than prophets and messengers.
