After graduating from the Lviv Conservatory in 1878, Leontovych furthered his music education at the Saint Petersburg Court Capella, studying composition under Nikolay Zaremba and choral conducting under Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. During this time, he also wrote his first major works, including the oratorio "The Resurrection of Christ" (1881) and the cantata "Taras Bulba" (1884).
