Pro-Russian forces captured Nadiya Savchenko, a Ukrainian military pilot and politician, in June 2014 during the early stages of the War in Donbas. She was subsequently taken to Russia, where she was subjected to an unfair trial and sentenced to 22 years in prison for allegedly aiding the deaths of two Russian journalists. International outcry eventually led to her release in May 2016 in a prisoner swap.
