Nat King Cole became a solo singer in the 1950s, after leaving the King Cole Trio. He was one of the most popular singers of the time, known for his smooth, mellow voice and his renditions of popular songs. Cole's career was cut short when he died of lung cancer in 1965, at the age of 45.
