Answer

At the age of 20, American swimmer Kathleen Ellis became the first woman to swim the 100-meter backstroke in less than one minute. She achieved this feat in a race at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. Ellis's time of 59.6 seconds was a new world record and remained the fastest time in the world for more than two years.
