Natan Sharansky was born in the Soviet Union. He was a prominent Soviet dissident and a leader of the human rights movement in the Soviet Union. In 1977, he was arrested for his activities and sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was released in 1986 in a prisoner exchange and emigrated to Israel.
