Makhno was 45 when he died in 1934. He had been a leading figure in the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–21, and had led the anarchist Black Army in its struggle against both the Bolsheviks and the Whites. After the defeat of the revolution, Makhno fled to Europe, where he lived in exile until his death.
