Ngô Đình Diệm was president of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1963. The United States viewed him as a tool in its efforts to contain communism in Southeast Asia. Diệm was seen as a strong anti-communist, but his authoritarian rule and human rights abuses alienated many South Vietnamese. In 1963, a group of South Vietnamese generals, with the support of the United States, overthrew and assassinated Diệm.
