Thiệu held the position of General in the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces when he became the head of a military junta in 1965. He was a member of the military junta that took power after the assassination of President Ngô Đình Diệm in 1963. Thiệu was elected president in 1967 and reelected in 1971. He was the last president of South Vietnam before the fall of Saigon in 1975.
