Nguyễn Văn Thiệu was a South Vietnamese military leader and politician who served as the President of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1975. He was a Roman Catholic who converted to the religion in 1964. Thiệu's conversion was seen as a way to unite the country and to gain the support of the Catholic community. However, it also alienated some of his supporters who were Buddhist.
