France was Nicholas I's chosen destination for exile. After his abdication in 1917, he and his family fled to the Crimea, but the threat of capture by the Bolsheviks forced them to seek refuge in France. They settled in the town of Cap d'Antibes, where Nicholas lived out the rest of his days in relative obscurity.
