Nicholas Murray Butler was an American educator, diplomat, and author who served as the president of Columbia University from 1901 to 1945. He was also the first president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1911 to 1929. As a diplomat, Butler was involved in the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations Covenant.
