Nicholas Murray Butler (April 27, 1862 – November 7, 1947) was an American philosopher, diplomat, and educator. He served as president of Columbia University from 1902 to 1945, and was the first president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1911 to 1929. He also served as the United States ambassador to Japan from 1931 to 1938.
