Hornby was born in the town of Redhill in Surrey, England. He was the son of a railway engineer and began working for the London and South Western Railway at the age of 14. After leaving the railway, he worked for a number of different companies before starting his own business in 1888. Hornby's first train set was released in 1900 and was an immediate success.
