Slaven Bilić succeeded Zlatko Kranjčar as the head coach of the Croatian national football team in October 2006, after Kranjčar died of a heart attack on 10 April of that year. Bilić had previously managed the Croatia national under-21 team, and had also had a spell in charge of Hajduk Split.
