After the fall of the Soviet Union, Ryzhkov joined the People's Patriotic Union of Russia (NPRU) and became its formal leader. The NPRU was a nationalist party that opposed the market reforms that had been implemented by Boris Yeltsin. Ryzhkov also opposed Yeltsin's policies towards the former Soviet republics. He believed that these policies were too harsh and that they would lead to the disintegration of Russia.
