Vavilov was arrested in 1940 for his opposition to Lysenkoism, a pseudo-scientific theory of genetics which denied the existence of Mendelian genetics and was promoted by Joseph Stalin. He was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to 20 years in prison. Vavilov died in prison in 1943.
