Yezhov was married, although little else is known about his personal life. He rose to prominence during the Great Purge, a period of political repression in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, in which he played a key role as the head of the NKVD, the secret police. However, he fell from grace and was executed in 1940 after being accused of treason.
