Nikolay spent much of his later life in exile to Siberia, which was a common punishment for political prisoners in the Russian Empire. He was exiled to Siberia in 1862, after he was arrested for his involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle, a group of intellectuals who met to discuss political reform.
