Nnamdi Azikiwe died in 1996. He was a Nigerian politician, statesman and nationalist who was the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. Azikiwe was a leading figure in the struggle for Nigerian independence from British rule and was also a prominent member of the Pan-African movement. He was a strong advocate of African unity and self-determination.
