Yakubu Gowon was the second Nigerian President, serving from 1966 to 1975. He was born in Kaduna in 1934 and attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1955 and rose through the ranks to become a major general. In 1966, he led a coup d'état that overthrew the government of General Aguiyi Ironsi. Gowon then became the head of state and president.
