Norman Bethune was a Canadian surgeon who volunteered to serve as a front-line trauma surgeon in the Spanish Civil War and the Second Sino-Japanese War. In Spain, he developed new techniques for treating battlefield injuries and helped to set up a mobile blood bank. In China, he established a hospital in Yan'an and treated thousands of wounded soldiers.
