Nozomi Hiroyama was not the first Japanese player in the French Ligue 1. That distinction goes to Kazuyoshi Miura, who made his debut for the Paris Saint-Germain club in 1993. Hiroyama did, however, become the first Japanese player to score a goal in the Ligue 1, when he scored for Rennes against Olympique de Marseille in 1999.
