Taraki represented the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), which was a communist political party in Afghanistan. The PDPA was founded in 1965 and was led by Taraki and his fellow communist Babrak Karmal. The PDPA was opposed to the monarchy of Mohammed Zahir Shah and sought to establish a socialist state in Afghanistan. In 1978, the PDPA overthrew the monarchy and established the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
