Nzinga's father was Ngola Kilombo Kia Kasenda, the ruler of the Ndongo kingdom in present-day Angola. He was a skilled military strategist who successfully defended his kingdom against Portuguese attempts at colonization. Nzinga inherited her father's political and military acumen, and she went on to become one of the most important and influential figures in African history.
