In AD 476, Odoacer, a Germanic general, deposed Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire. This event marked the end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Odoacer established a new kingdom in Italy, but his rule was short-lived. He was defeated by the Ostrogoths in 493.
