Hungary was the furthest point into Europe that Ögedei Khan's armies penetrated. Under Ögedei's rule, the Mongol Empire expanded rapidly, conquering vast territories in Asia and Europe. In 1241, Ögedei's armies invaded Europe, crossing the Carpathian Mountains and ravaging Hungary. They then advanced into Poland and Silesia, but were eventually defeated by a coalition of European forces at the Battle of Legnica.
