Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was elected president of Iceland on June 25, 2016. He succeeded Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who had served as president since 1996. Jóhannesson is a historian and a former professor of history at the University of Iceland. He was also the chairman of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service from 2007 to 2016.
