Olav V became heir apparent to the Norwegian throne in 1905 when his father, King Haakon VII, became the first king of Norway after the dissolution of the union with Sweden. Olav V was born in 1903 as Prince Alexander of Denmark, but his family moved to Norway after the dissolution of the union. Olav V was crowned king of Norway in 1957 and ruled until his death in 1991.
