Moon. Io is a moon of Jupiter, discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. It is the innermost of the four Galilean moons and the fourth-largest moon in the Solar System. Rømer used the eclipses of Io to measure the speed of light. He observed that the time between eclipses varied depending on whether Earth was moving towards or away from Jupiter.
