Where was Ole Rømer working when he measured the speed of light?

  • Royal Observatory in Paris

  • University of Copenhagen

  • Greenwich Observatory

  • Berlin Observatory

Answer

Ole Rømer measured the speed of light while working at the Royal Observatory in Paris. In 1676, he observed the eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io and noticed that the time between eclipses varied depending on the Earth's position in its orbit around the Sun. From this, he deduced that light travels at a finite speed and calculated its value to be approximately 215,000 kilometers per second.
