Turchynov succeeded Viktor Yanukovych as acting President of Ukraine after Yanukovych fled the country in February 2014. Yanukovych had been elected President of Ukraine in 2010, but his rule was marked by widespread corruption and political instability. In November 2013, Yanukovych made the controversial decision to reject an agreement with the European Union that would have brought Ukraine closer to the West.
