Mellberg succeeded Fredrik Svensson as captain of the Swedish national team in 2001. Svensson had been captain since 1994, but retired from international football after the 2002 World Cup. Mellberg, who had been vice-captain since 2000, took over the armband and led Sweden to the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup.
