Omar Bongo succeeded M'ba in 1967. Bongo had been a close associate of M'ba, and had served as his Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1960 to 1966. After M'ba's death, Bongo was elected president in a controversial election. Bongo ruled Gabon for over 40 years, and was one of the longest-serving leaders in Africa.
