Orlando Gibbons was an English composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras, best known for his English madrigals, church music and virginal music. He was a pupil of Thomas Morley, and was the most important composer of the English virginalist school, along with William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. His music is characterized by its elegant melody, rich harmonies and intricate counterpoint.
