Joseph François Oscar Bernadotte, more commonly known as Oscar I, was born on July 4, 1799, in Paris, France. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who later became King Charles XIV John of Sweden, and Désirée Clary. Oscar I succeeded his father to the Swedish throne in 1844 and reigned until his death in 1859.
