Désirée Clary, the spouse of Jean Bernadotte, was the mother of Oscar I. As the only surviving son of Charles XIV John of Sweden, he reigned as the King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 until his death in 1859. Queen Désirée was previously engaged to Napoleon Bonaparte before marrying Bernadotte, who assumed the Swedish throne after the death of Charles XIII in 1818.
