Mandelstam was in transit to a corrective-labor camp when he died. He had been arrested in 1934 for writing a poem critical of Joseph Stalin, and was sentenced to five years in a labor camp. He died in a transit camp near Vladivostok in 1938, of typhus and malnutrition.
