In 1991, Osvaldo Ardiles took over as manager of Swindon Town, a club in the English third division. Ardiles, a former World Cup winner with Argentina, had previously managed Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. Under his guidance, Swindon Town gained promotion to the second division in 1993 and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in 1994. Ardiles left the club in 1995 after a disappointing start to the season.
