The Kingdom of Italy had been ruled by a series of Germanic kings since the Lombards invaded in the 6th century. In 951, Otto I, the King of Germany, invaded Italy and married the widow of the last Lombard king. Otto was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962, and the Kingdom of Italy became part of the Holy Roman Empire.
