Otto Warmbier, an American student, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea after he was accused of stealing a propaganda poster. He was released in June 2017 after being held for 17 months. Warmbier suffered severe brain damage during his imprisonment and died shortly after his return to the United States.
