On January 2, 2016, Otto Warmbier, an American student, was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport in North Korea. He was accused of trying to steal a propaganda poster from a restricted area of the airport. Warmbier was detained for over a year and was subjected to torture and harsh conditions during his imprisonment. He was eventually released in a vegetative state and died shortly after returning to the United States.
