Before returning to Scotland, Coyle played for Bolton Wanderers in England. Coyle started his career with Airdrieonians, before moving to Dundee United in 1995. He then had spells with Dundee and St Johnstone before joining Bolton Wanderers in 2000. Coyle made over 100 appearances for Bolton Wanderers, before returning to Scotland to join Motherwell in 2004.
