Upon his resignation from the United States Army, Pierre G. T. Beauregard held the rank of Brigadier General. He had been promoted to this rank on November 30, 1859, after serving as a colonel in the United States Army from 1838 to 1857. Beauregard resigned from the United States Army in February 1861, shortly after the outbreak of the American Civil War, in order to join the Confederate Army.
