Paavo Nurmi was a Finnish long-distance runner who won nine Olympic gold medals. Nurmi was born in Turku, Finland, on June 13, 1897. He began running as a child and showed great talent at the sport. In 1912, Nurmi competed in his first Olympics, held in Stockholm, Sweden. He won the 10,000 meters and the 5,000 meters.
