Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968 at the age of 81 in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. He was a Capuchin friar and mystic who was noted for his stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which he bore on his body. He was a popular figure and attracted many pilgrims to his home in San Giovanni Rotondo. He was beatified in 1999 and canonized in 2002.
