Most of Padre Pio's religious life was spent in San Giovanni Rotondo, a small town in southern Italy. He arrived there in 1916 and remained there until his death in 1968. Padre Pio was a Capuchin friar and a mystic who was known for his stigmata, the wounds of Christ that appeared on his body. He was also a gifted healer and a spiritual director who helped many people.
