In 1930, Palmiro Togliatti, an Italian communist politician and leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), renounced his Italian citizenship in protest against the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. Togliatti had been a prominent figure in the anti-fascist movement in Italy and had been forced to flee the country in 1926. He lived in exile in the Soviet Union for several years before returning to Italy in 1944.
