Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and suffragette who played a leading role in the early 20th century women's suffrage movement. She was imprisoned several times for her activities and her militancy and determination made her one of the most famous and controversial women of her time. In 1907 she was elected as a Poor Law Guardian for the Marylebone district of London.
